Ballybay Pearse Brothers Seniors maintained their winning record in the Championship with a narrow win over Monaghan Harps last Sunday.
The locals had the better of the early exchanges and points from Paul Finlay and a brace from Chris McGuinness put then a point up when a red card left them down to 14 men for the rest of the game. This didn’t seem to affect last year’s county finalists as immediately points from Dessie Ward, Colm Lennon and 2 from Paddy O’Neill, allied with 2 superb goals by Chris McGuinness gave them a commanding half time lead of 2-7 v 0-3.
However, the Harps came really back into it in the 3rd quarter and by the water break, they had added 1- 7 to just points by Dessie and Chris. Paddy O’Neill’s 3rd point of the game gave some breathing space but almost immediately the home team goaled to leave the bare minimum in it with 10 minutes left. The last 5 minutes were a rollercoaster, the Harps levelled only for Colm restore our one point lead, only for the Harps to level, only for Tommy Kerr to restore a one point lead, only for the Harps to level yet again before Tommy Kerr pointed from near the 50 yard line to give the Pearse Brother the narrowest of victories.
