PAINT COMPANY WITH A LOCAL CONNECTION
A big thank you to Seamus Coyle (Latton) and Packie Mc Adam (Modern Décor, Monaghan) for unearthing some very interesting information regarding a Moore family with origins in Drumchannon, Latton.
Benjamin Moore was born in 1855 to Benjamin Moore, a British army officer & Martha Meredith in Drumchannon. Benjamin emigrated to the USA in the 1870's. He along with his brother Robert worked in the paint industry & in 1878 set up their own company called ‘Moore Bros’, manufacturing a calsom finish paint known as ‘muresco’ which they invented. In 1883 in Brooklyn, New York, Benjamin set up Benjamin Moore and Co. Ltd. In 1906 his brother Patrick went to Toronto to manage a new factory. Further factories opened in Cleveland, Chicago and St. Louis. In 1907 the company hired its first Chemist and set up a research Department. Benjamin died in 1917 however the company continued to thrive and innovate. In 1982 they were the first paint business in the world to introduce a computer colour matching service.
Benjamin Moore paints still exist today and sold in 7,500 premises worldwide, including McAdam's in Monaghan town. The Moore's home & land in Drumchannon is now owned by Paddy Duffy.
Benjamin's sisters Eliza & Mary lived at Aughnamullen Glebe, which was purchased for them by their brother. Benjamin Moore’s parents & sisters are buried in Corlea cemetery, Bawn.
