BALLYBAY CULTURE NIGHT SUCCESS

The first ever Cultural Night in Ballybay was a great success on Friday 21st September. The event was part of a range of activities throughout the county supported by Monaghan County Council, Creative Ireland and the Dept. of Arts, Culture, Heritage. The Ballybay event began with the launch of ‘Retrospective’ photos from Co. Monaghan by Donal McEnroe. Over the last 45 years Donal has documented events, people and places in Co. Monaghan. It is a unique photographic archive of the county and people that has undergone significant social change in that time. This exhibition reflects a different time with a number of photos of Telephone Exchanges in Ballybay, Monaghan, Castleblayney and Rockcorry. However the 1970’s was also the era of the ‘Troubles’ and a number of photos feature the aftermath of the Monaghan and Castleblayney bombings. This exhibition was formally launched by Audrey Donnolly the postmistress in Ballybay Post Office the 5th generation of her family to hold that position. At the opening the photos provoked lots of memories of the ‘old days’ in the Post Office and some great stories from a different time. The exhibition is on display in Ballybay Credit Union and the Post Office.

‘The Road to Ballybay’ on Friday 21st in Ballybay Pearse Park highlighted the rich cultural heritage in Ballybay and also showcased the local talent. The evening featured the songs of Percy French with songs like ‘Come back Paddy Reilly to Ballyjamesduff’ and the ‘Mountains of Mourne’ aby Michael Mooney and Brian Carroll. Recitations ‘Ach I Dunno’ and ‘A Mother Story’ performed by Imelda Smyth and Brid Mc Cabe. William Clarke was a well-known Piper from Ballybay and Peter and Lily Ann Coyle played tunes from the repertoire of William Clarke. They are 2 wonderful young Pipers and their performance was much appreciated by the audience.A few well known ballads were sung by Michael Mooney and Grainne Smyth which proved very popular with the audience singing along with them.

Finally the ‘Carnival Years’ in Ballybay were recalled with songs by Brendan Macklin and Brian Carroll and a short sketch with Imelda Smyth, Brid McCabe, Kevin Quinn, Daniel McGregor and Feargal Smyth . The musical accompaniment was provided by Anne Cumiskey which was excellent. The finale was the full cast and audience singing the Tommy Makem song, ‘The Town of Ballybay’. The overall reaction to the night that this was a great night’s entertainment and it was free!!! The hope is to build on this and see more live performances by local talent in the future.

EDUARD KLASSEN RETURNS TO BALLYBAY

His concerts include a variety of Christian harp music from South America, North America and Europe interspersed with many personal stories of his life from boyhood in the wilderness of Paraguay to the present time. His concerts are always entertaining and inspiring as his natural sense of humour helps him to develop an excellent rapport with audiences wherever he goes.
All Eduard’s Irish concerts this year are fundraisers for an orphanage in Bogota, Colombia. You can hear Eduard play and speak in Second Ballybay Presbyterian Church on Thursday 20th September at 8pm. Ballybay Country Gospel Group will also be taking part.

LOCAL WRITERS PLAY PREMIERS IN DUBLIN

“Melt” written by Ballybay playwright Shane Mac an Bhaird will premier in the Smock Alley Theatre during next week’s Dublin Theater Festival. The Festival website describes the play as follows:

A world premiere production, Melt is about the folly of humankind, our Icarus-like ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, and the damage we do ourselves and our world in the process.

Its setting is the Antarctic – the last great wilderness, the edge of the known world, the one relatively uncontaminated territory. Into this idyllic landscape is catapulted the gloriously anarchic Boylan, a pioneering Irish ecologist gone rogue. As the play opens, he is joined by Cook, a young scientist who is strung between his professional ambitions and his romantic longing for the mysterious Dr Hansen – Boylan’s ex-wife.

And then there is Veba, the strange female Boylan captures and brings up from the sub-glacial lake.

Melt is a funny, sophisticated fairytale that explores the human condition, acknowledges its fragility and takes the audience on a jaunt to the edge of the abyss”.

Shane’s father is Desmond Ward, and mother is Sinead Hogan, both of whom are lecturers in Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology. He went to Loughmourne National School and then attended Our Lady's Castleblaney Secondary School. ‘Melt’ is Shane’s fourth play and runs from tonight Thursday 28th September until 8th October.

So, we wish Rosemary a long and happy retirement and thank her for making our visits to the library such an enjoyable experience.

The organizers of the Ballybay Octoberfest have confirmed that a party of thirty German visitors will be in the town for the festival that runs from 30th September to 2nd October. The organisers are appealing to all traders and householders to make an effort to display Monaghan, Ballybay and Irish flags and bunting. As it happens the Bavarian colours are very similar to the Monaghan colours so the visitors should feel very much at home. If anyone is seeking flags and bunting Peter Murnane has a suitable supply. A full weekend of activities and music is planned. On the Friday evening members of the Ballybay Clones Municipal Council will meet and greet the German visitors at Ardmore House, The Square. This will occur between 6pm and 8pm and will also result in the unveiling of some commemorative plagues. There will be music in the Market House from 6pm until 10pm including “Hand Like a Foot” who will take to the stage at 8pm. There will also be a car treasure hunt starting at Liam Smyth’s at 6pm. On Saturday the Market House will host music from 4pm until 10pm. At 4pm to 6pm there will be ceili music and buskers taking centre stage. ‘Lighthouse’ will play from 6pm to 8pm and then finishing off the evening’s entertainment will be ‘Setanta’. On Sunday Lower Main Street will be the venue for a lorry pull starting at 2pm. Once again the Market House will host afternoon music – this time its Aidan Clerkin from 4-30pm until 7pm.

ROAD CLOSURES CAUSING HAVOC

A number of locals have been in touch with the Ballybay News to voice their concerns that two local roads are closed at the one time. The Ballybay to Shercock Road and the Ballybay to Cootehill Road have both been closed for a number of weeks. This is affecting local people who have to take diversions and traders in Ballybay who are losing trade because a large number of their regular customers can’t get into town. Perhaps Monaghan County Council could open one of the roads and carry out are what are no doubt necessary repairs/resurfacing at different times.

BOWLS

The Ballybay outdoor Club where invited by the Cavan Club to play a friendly game on their new outdoor all weather green on Saturday last 17th September. Eighteen of our members made the short trip to Cavan and play began at 11 o clock. All who played gave the green the thumbs up with all agreeing it is much slower than our own all weather surface. Two games of nine ends each and at the conclusion a victory was recorded by the Ballybay Club. Our thanks to the Cavan club for their hospitality and refreshments in the sports complex when play was over. A return trip will be extended to the Cavan Club later in the year.
