BALLYBAY FEATURES IN THE WATCHMEN

Monaghan County Museum is currently hosting an exhibition entitled “The Watchmen” which looks at policing and crime and punishment in Monaghan. As part of the exhibition visitors will learn about ‘The Infamous Sam Gray of Ballybay’. Gray was an Orangeman and owner of the York Hotel, Main Street (Sloweys Bar) who was eventually prosecuted for minor offences despite carrying out numerous terrible atrocities. The exhibition also covers ‘The attack on Ballytrain Barracks’ which was the first Barracks north of the Boyne to be attacked during the War of Independence. The exhibition runs until December at the Museum in Monaghan Town and is completely free.
