WORLD RENOWNED RESEACHER TO GIVE BIG HOUSE TALK IN CAHANS

Cahans Meeting House will welcome Monaghan native and Professor of history at Maynooth University, Terence Dooley, to speak about ‘the big houses’ in Irish history on Friday 11 April at 8pm. The Killanny man has recently been elected to the Royal Irish Academy and is recognised as a world class researcher. He is also the author of numerous books which includes, “The decline of the big house in Ireland: a study of Irish landed families, 1860-1960”, which he published in 2001. One of the houses to be discussed is Dartrey Castle which had replaced an earlier property known as Dawson Grove. The estate was sold before the Great War, the house abandoned and its contents auctioned in the 1930s, and the house itself demolished in 1946. This lecture tells the story of what happened and considers what might have been.
For anyone with an interest in local history, this is a wonderful opportunity to listen to a world renowned expert. Admission is free however donations would be welcome. There will also be supper served on the night and a chance to speak with Professor Dooley.
